I need to upload around 14GB to my hosting site. The problem is with my connection this could take weeks. How fast are uploads at places like Beanscene and other free WiFi spots?
Are there any places you can go to upload files quickly?
Most of the free wifi’s like starbuck are B or G at best, but then with the number of users and most likely throttled bandwidth, you will probably upload poorly. You should copy you data onto a portable HDD, then go to a public library or local university to upload on their wired systems.

14 GB is a LOT to upload. Make sure your hosting company will accept that much. Also on normal dsl/cable links this much could take 2 days or more, so be sure also that there is either enough bandwidth to complete quicker, or that you can have access for long enough. You might be better breaking it into smaller amounts and doing a section at a time.

Depends on the upload bandwith of the site, the wifi type (b 11mbps / g or a 54mbps), as well as range and signal strength. Also wifi is only half duplex meaning you are at best getting 1/2 the throughput (ie 5.5mb on B) in ideal scenarios. Banking they at best have a T1, or worst DSL/Cable (unless its a hotel, some have MetroE 1-1000mb), you’ll be sharing 384k-1.5mb upload (maybe less) with the rest of the traffic on the hotspot. If they have a full T1, you signal is optimal, and no one else is using the bandwidth, it will take 2.6 hours, but chances you are looking at morelike 10+ hours to do what you want, if not days. They might also have port filtering on the router that will not allow the use of port 21.

What the hell are you uploading??? Seems rather shady to me. Are you attempting to hide all your illegal files from the FBI??? 14GB good GAWD!!!!!
