    When talking about …
When talking about free software, free refers to freedom, not price. You have the freedom to run the program as you see fit, modify the source, and redistribute the original or modified versions. There are companies that sell free-software, such as Redhat (basic desktop is $80), and there is a large market in providing support for free software. It’s free-as-in-speech, not necessarily free-as-in-beer.

And like I said, most software is produced in-house, sold to a specific client.

“Downside is, there’s no company to call if the programs don’t work.”

What are you talking about? There are companies that do nothing but provide support for free software.

  7. Arkblu Says:

    Free Software …
Free Software actually creates more jobs, not take them away. Besides, most programmers work on in-house projects. The software used on your computer makes up only about 10% of the market.

Although i don’t use Linux as my main desktop OS for various reasons. I always try and use FOSS whenever I can. Firefox, Open Office, VirtualBox, GIMP and Audacity are all FOSS packages that I use regularly.

However I’ve yet to come across a FOSS package which gives me the ease-of-use, functionality and performance I need for quick and simple H.264 video editing. Currently iMovie serves me just fine here.

This will HELP to find bugs in a very fast way(look Mozilla Firefox), plus, increasing jobs, because they love to do it. Future is coming, and we will evolve with more jobs, more than what we have now.
    Open Source is the key.

    One of the …
One of the statements you made is inaccurate. You said there’s no company behind much of the open source software. Often there is a company that backs a particular open source program. OpenOffice development was backed by Sun (StarOffice). Of course Sun may not help with OO problems, but there are consultants (commercial) willing to provide software support for a fee. Because source is available OpenSource is often easier to support commercially. Now if your goal is simply to sue somebody….
